Ugh, Allergies! I got them. 

As luck would have it... I had my first bout of allergies EVER while our Advanced Allergy Therapeutics System was down in the middle of a shelter in place. All I wanted to do was be outside in the spring air.  (and maybe eat too much sugar and stress about the state of the world)... Hmmm… Perfect storm.

Oh! The misery. And if you have been an allergy patient of mine …I am sorry if I ever had a lack of urgency and empathy.  It takes walking in someone else’s shoes to really understand. Allergies suck.

I am, however, very happy to report that all of this is behind me and I am going to tell you how I got rid of my allergies without AAT and give you some pretty good advice on getting rid of yours. (AAT is now working again...sadly, we can not do treatments quite yet.  We will keep you posted!)

First of all, understanding how you get allergies is really important.  And if you want to know more about that click here on our blog post, “understanding allergies.”

But this post is not about understanding… this post is about relief.  Sometimes even in functional medicine (where root cause is everything) we just need some relief…

Here is exactly what I did….

  1. Vitamin D - so the first thing I did was up my vitamin D intake to about 8000 iu / day.  Vitamin D is an incredible immune balancer and preliminary evidence suggests that it can help with allergies.  Given our current state of affairs with Covid-19 and low vitamin D being a risk factor for poor outcome.  I thought it prudent to increase.  The vitamin D I use is always balanced with K.  We use EmulsiD3 Synergy from Designs for Health on just about everyone.

  2. Quercetin - I started 500 mg 2 x day.  I usually like the product HistaEze by Designs for Health as it contains stinging nettle and some other really amazing antihistamine components… sadly, this was sold out.  So I started a basic quercetin.  You can take up to 1000 mg 2 x day.  I think this was the game changer.

  3. Bitters - I started herbal bitters.  Why?  Because they help with EVERYTHING!  If I am getting allergies then my gut is likely not happy.  The herbs in the bitter formulation stabilize the immune system, aid digestion and are anti-inflammatory. Truth be told, I overdid it on birthday cake.  We have about 5 birthdays in a 2 week span and you can only say no cake so many times.  Plus my eldest daughter is becoming a phenomenal baker and I couldn’t refuse a try or two :/ Bitters helped me to balance back my gut and blood sugar. You can get bitters at any health food store or you can purchase some here. You take 2.5 ml 10 min before each meal.

  4. Megasporebiotic - I often say I would not want to be in practice without it.  This amazing spore forming probiotic helps restore your own gut microbes, balance your GI ecosystem and heal an inflamed gut.  Why does this help allergies… your gut is 80% of your immune system and the fastest way to allergies is a GI ecosystem that is out of whack.  To learn more… check out this blog post.

  5. Fish Oil - Fish oil decreases inflammation and helps to stabilize cell membranes that would otherwise release histamine.  It can also give you an amazing night sleep.  Please be picky about your fish oil.  It can often contain heavy metals or pollutants since our oceans are the cleanest.  For allergies you want a Fish Oil that contains significantly more EPA than DHA. I usually take OmegAvail HiPo by Designs for Health.

As always consult your physician before taking anything especially if you are on medications!

Some other things I did…

I had a tough talk with myself and squashed the sugar and gluten. (most of the sugar… we had another birthday yesterday…no joke!)  This alone was reaffirming of why I don’t normally eat those things in large amounts. I instantly felt more stable emotionally and had significantly less inflammation.

I also stopped posting about, scrolling through and engaging with the controversies around Covid-19.  Instead, I stay up to date on facts and research AND that is it.  Stress is one of the main factors associated with allergies. Fear based info and panic is not on the “agenda” for my nervous system. Smart pro-active + balanced action is. More on that to come…
